These are perfect when warming up for a total body workout, traveling on vacation, or trying to get a sweat in at home with limited equipment.
Resistance bands are literally the first thing I suggest all my clients to purchase for their home gym. They are versatile and effective for building muscle strength under constant tension.
- Cost effective
- Light weight
- Easy to store away
- Can work every muscle group
- Create lots of different tensions
Tension: The bands force the body to stabilize and activate more muscles at once. Unlike free weights, resistance bands maintain continuous tension throughout the entire exercise and can create greater muscular growth. With free weights most of the muscle tension comes while performing the concentric portion of the exercise versus the eccentric portion. Think about a bicep curl - as you curl up (concentric) the muscle is under tension, as you release down (eccentric) the muscle eases some of that tension.
Unlike free weights, the bands naturally limit the body’s range of motion, therefore overextension of joints is unlikely. This is great for those of us who are rehabilitating injuries and are at risk of overextending the joint.
Additionally, you will get more of a caloric burn while using resistance bands. Your muscle is working both concentrically and eccentrically, which provides a more effective overall workout.
