This episode of Nike Trained featured Ben Bruno as a guest on the show. Ben is a well-known personal trainer to many actors, Victoria’s Secret supermodels, and professional athletes. His approach to fitness just makes sense. He is all about the basics of strength training: push, pull, hinge, squat, lunge, and carry. It is easy for people to get distracted by the crazy exercises they see on social media. If that’s your goal… great, but to get there you need to start with the basics. His moto may sound familiar KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid).
Ben talks about the importance of have a training program and following it.
He describes his training style as strength training being the main entre and cardio as the side.
He debunks the myth of changing up the workout to ‘shock the body.’ When you follow a program (he follows the 80/20 rule). 80% of the exercises will be some form of the 6 foundational movements.
1. Push 2. Pull 3. Hinge 4. Squat 5. Lunge 6. Carry
- For example, you should always have a pull movement in your program. I know you’re thinking, omg that sounds so boring! But guess what, there are multiple different ways to perform the same movement (dumbbell single arm bent over row, TRX row, kettle bell row, resistance band rows - you get the gist).
I really enjoyed this episode of Nike Trained podcast and listening to the straight forward approach to strength training that Ben has. I hope you enjoy as well!
